Key Takeaways

  • 2/10 net 30 means 2% off for payment within 10 days, otherwise the full amount is due within 30 days.
  • On a $5,000 invoice dated March 2, 2026, the client pays $4,900 by March 12 or $5,000 by April 1.
  • Skipping the discount costs the client about 37% a year (2 ÷ 98 × 365 ÷ 20).
  • For you, the discount is a real cost: $100 on a $5,000 invoice. Offer it only if early payment is worth that.
  • Write the dates and amounts in words on the invoice, not just "2/10 net 30".

2/10 net 30 means the client can take 2% off the invoice if they pay within 10 days of the invoice date. If they do not, the full amount is due within 30 days. On a $5,000 invoice dated March 2, 2026, the client pays $4,900 by March 12, or $5,000 by April 1.

It is a common early payment discount. It looks small, but for the client it is one of the best returns on cash they can get, and for you it is a real cost. This guide shows the maths on both sides and how to write the terms on an invoice. For other terms, see the invoice payment terms guide.

What does 2/10 net 30 mean?

2/10 net 30 means a 2% discount for payment within 10 days, and the full amount due within 30 days. Read it in three parts:

PartMeaning
2The discount: 2% off the invoice total
10The discount period: pay within 10 days of the invoice date to get it
net 30The full amount is due within 30 days of the invoice date

All days are calendar days counted from the invoice date, as with plain net 30.

How does a client calculate a 2/10 net 30 discount?

Multiply the invoice total by 2% and subtract it, if payment is made by day 10.

  1. Invoice total: $5,000, dated March 2, 2026.
  2. Discount: $5,000 × 2% = $100.
  3. Pay by March 12, 2026: $5,000 − $100 = $4,900.
  4. Pay after March 12 but by April 1, 2026: $5,000.
  5. After April 1, the invoice is overdue.

The discount normally applies to the invoice amount for the goods or services. Say on the invoice whether it also applies to shipping or tax, if you charge them.

What does skipping the discount cost the client?

A client who skips a 2/10 net 30 discount pays about 37% a year for the extra 20 days with their money. That is why many finance teams always take it.

The formula is: discount ÷ (100 − discount) × 365 ÷ (full days − discount days). For 2/10 net 30: 2 ÷ 98 × 365 ÷ 20 = 37.2% a year (simple rate, not compounded).

TermsDiscountDiscount daysFull daysYearly cost of skipping the discount
1/10 net 301%103018.4%
2/10 net 302%103037.2%
3/10 net 303%103056.4%

2/10 net 452%104521.3%
2/10 net 602%106014.9%

The higher the yearly cost, the stronger the reason for the client to pay early, and the more the discount costs you.

Should a freelancer offer 2/10 net 30?

Only if being paid 20 days sooner is worth 2% of the invoice to you. On a $5,000 invoice, the early payment costs you $100.

  • It can make sense when you have a cash gap, when a large client is slow to pay, or when the client asked for longer terms and you want to pull payment forward.
  • It rarely makes sense for small invoices, for clients who already pay on time, or on a thin margin.
  • Watch for late discounts. Some clients take the discount and pay on day 25. Decide in advance whether you accept that, and say so on the invoice.

Asking for a deposit, or simply using shorter terms such as net 15, often gets you paid sooner without giving anything away.

How do you write 2/10 net 30 on an invoice?

Write the short form and the real dates and amounts in words, so nobody has to calculate:

Payment terms: 2/10 net 30. Pay $4,900 by March 12, 2026 (2% early payment discount), or $5,000 by April 1, 2026.

Put the discount in your quote or contract too. In the free invoice generator, add this line in the Notes field and download the PDF; the invoice total stays the full amount. Due On Time does not apply early payment discounts automatically.

What other early payment discount terms are there?

The same pattern works with any numbers: the first number is the discount, the second the discount period, and the last the full term.

  • 1/10 net 30: 1% off within 10 days, full amount within 30 days.
  • 2/10 net 60: 2% off within 10 days, full amount within 60 days. See net 60 payment terms.
  • 2/10 EOM: usually 2% off if paid within 10 days after the end of the invoice month, full amount by a later date set in the terms. Spell the dates out, because companies use EOM in different ways.
