Tax invoice or ordinary invoice: which one do you need?
In the UAE, only a business registered for VAT, with a Tax Registration Number (TRN), issues tax invoices. You must register when your taxable supplies and imports go over AED 375,000 in the last 12 months, or will in the next 30 days. You can register by choice from AED 187,500.
If you are not registered, send an ordinary invoice without VAT; the Ministry of Finance calls it a commercial invoice. In the builder, set the title to "Invoice", the tax rate to 0 and the tax name to Tax, and write "Not registered for VAT" in the notes. Do not add VAT or call it a tax invoice: under the VAT law, anyone who invoices an amount as tax must pay it to the Federal Tax Authority.

What this template puts on the tax invoice
Article 59(1) of the Executive Regulation lists what a full tax invoice must show. With the title set to "Tax Invoice" and the tax name set to VAT, the PDF prints "TAX INVOICE" at the top, a VAT column with the rate on every line, the amount of each line, the subtotal, "VAT (5%)" and the total, all in the invoice currency. Choose AED as the currency so the amounts and the VAT are in dirhams.
Issue a full tax invoice within 14 days of the date of supply. The builder uses one VAT rate for the whole invoice, so put zero-rated or exempt items on a separate invoice. For a sale to a client who is not registered, or of AED 10,000 or less, a shorter simplified tax invoice is allowed; the guide below explains it.

UAE e-invoicing is coming, for registered and unregistered businesses
The UAE is moving business-to-business invoices to an electronic system run through accredited service providers. It applies to any person doing business in the UAE, whether or not they are registered for VAT; a business that has no tax registration must get a tax ID from the FTA.
Businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more must go live by 1 January 2027, and businesses below that by 1 July 2027. Sales to consumers are out of scope for now. Due On Time does not connect to the UAE e-invoicing system, so a PDF from this template will not meet those rules once they apply to you.

Frequently asked questions
What is the format of a tax invoice in the UAE?
The words "Tax Invoice", the supplier's name, address and TRN, the client's name and address (and TRN if registered), a sequential number, the date of issue and of supply, a description, and for each item the quantity, unit price, VAT rate and amount, then any discount, the VAT and the total in AED.
Can I issue an invoice without VAT in the UAE?
Yes, if you are not registered for VAT. Send an ordinary invoice with no VAT line and without the words "Tax Invoice". If you are registered, standard-rated sales need a tax invoice.
Do I need a TRN on my invoice?
Only if you are registered for VAT: then your TRN must be on every tax invoice, and the client's TRN too when they are registered. In the free builder, write both in the Notes field.
What is the VAT registration threshold in the UAE?
Registration is mandatory when taxable supplies and imports go over AED 375,000 in the last 12 months, or are expected to in the next 30 days. You can register voluntarily from AED 187,500.
